Goals & Intentions

I fell in love with my career many years ago.  I set out to be an educator since I was a young child. I went in the field of education to make a difference in the life of the people I came into contact with. I know education is the number one factor in individuals moving out of poverty and other socio-economic levels. We must have educated citizens and an educated workplace.  I have reflected many times on my value system as I determine the goals I want to meet.  If I were to describe myself based on inventories of self-discovery I would be described as an extrovert, who is cooperative, compassionate, and community oriented.

My intentions within my job are to give power to voices which may have been silenced.  I instill self-esteem and efficacy within any student and any course I have ever taught.  It isn't just about the content; it is creating an atmosphere where individuals have a new start to reach the goals they may have never thought they could.  It is about seeing the light go off as the realize their potential.

When the School of Developmental Education was disbanded, I heard from many areas on campus that developmental education faculty only want to give students warm kudos.  This is not true with me.  I have always believed in setting the bar high and encourage students to rise above it.  I have always taught my courses with rigor.  My number one goal is to teach individuals critical thinking skills.  A college education is not all about knowledge and rote memorization.  It is about seeing multiple perspectives, evaluation, and analysis. It is about embracing diversity and understanding how past history affects today's issues.  I want my students to leave my courses with the ability to solve problems with confidence.

I have concentrated on how to reach individuals with where are they are now and draw from there to see what lies beyond.  I think so many of our younger students have not been given the opportunity to learn how to communicate with others, to tap into their creativity, and expression of thoughts.  My future goals and intentions are to continue to bring current news and situations into the classroom beyond just facts and figures. I want to students to thirst for a deeper understanding of their lives and the world around them.
